Timothée Chalamet Teams up with a Historic Parisian Jewelry House for a Stunning, Candy-Themed Cartier Necklace.
In Gene Wilder’s iconic portrayal of Willy Wonka in the 1971 film, he whimsically suggested that “invention” was comprised of a unique mix of elements. Now, with the reins passed to the ever-stylish Timothée Chalamet, the recipe for creativity seems no less fantastical, particularly in crafting his attention-grabbing red-carpet ensembles. For his latest show-stopping look, Chalamet collaborated with a historic Parisian jewelry house, drawing inspiration from vintage aesthetics and devoting 450 hours to meticulous craftsmanship. The result? A one-of-a-kind, candy-themed Cartier necklace, showcased by the modern matinee idol at the world premiere of “Wonka” at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Admiring his new accessory, adorned with 964 emeralds, rubellites, pink tourmalines, and blue opals, Chalamet expressed his awe, stating, “It’s beyond anything I could have imagined.”

As a house ambassador known for mixing metallic Tom Ford tailoring with classic accessories or donning vintage pieces with casual attire, Chalamet delved into Cartier’s archives and collaborated with Marie-Laure Cérède, the creative director of jewelry and watchmaking. Exploring the vibrant and playful designs of Cartier from the ’60s and ’70s, he sought to infuse youthful exuberance into the creation while retaining Cartier’s essence.Crafting a piece that harmonized with Chalamet’s style yet bore the unmistakable Cartier signature was Cérède’s challenge. The necklace’s vivid hues of pink, green, and blue beautifully embodied Chalamet’s directive, diverging from traditional men’s red-carpet jewelry, which often leans towards understated elegance.

Chalamet’s approach to fashion and jewelry defies conventional gender norms. Rooted in his upbringing and experiences at a performing arts high school in New York, he emphasizes wearing what feels right, irrespective of societal norms. His love for jewelry extends to pieces with personal significance, such as the Star of David necklace he wore in “Call Me By Your Name,” a spontaneous purchase from Milan that became a cherished memento. While his Wonka necklace references a pivotal role and features nearly 1,000 precious stones, Chalamet values sentiment over sparkle, emphasizing that the emotional connection and memories associated with jewelry hold greater importance than their monetary value or aesthetics.Unique in its combination of pale blues and bold pinks, the necklace deliberately contrasts colors, a bold choice lauded by Cérède for its audacity.
Unlike the necklace from “Call Me By Your Name,” destined for a drawer at home, this Cartier masterpiece will join the Cartier Collection, displayed at global jewelry exhibitions post-promotion. Despite rumors of his relationship with Kylie Jenner, a Cartier aficionado and billionaire, Chalamet isn’t expecting extravagant gifts. However, with Christmas near his birthday, he humorously keeps his expectations modest, even as he’s linked to a family known for grand gestures.
