Florence Pugh at Valentino A bold glimpse into the rise of transparent skirts in 2024 fashion.

Naked dresses have dominated the fashion scene lately, thanks to influencers like Rihanna, Emily Ratajkowski, and the Kardashian family. However, it seems that see-through skirts might take over from sheer gowns in 2024. Florence Pugh, known for embracing bold fashion choices, notably wore a transparent sequined maxi skirt with visible white briefs at the Valentino show. Yet, designers are presenting ways to make these attention-grabbing skirts more adaptable for everyday wear, as witnessed on the runways of Givenchy, Carven, 16Arlington, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Coperni for the spring/summer 2024 collections.

This trend isn’t merely about showcasing as much skin as possible. Fashion houses showcased sheer skirts as clever layering pieces, adding depth and texture to otherwise classic looks. Often falling at or just below the knee and crafted from romantic fabrics like organza and tulle, these delicate skirts were integrated into elevated basics. They were paired with grey knitwear, tailored coats, belted blazers, and finished with ballet pumps or loafers, making them suitable for daytime wear.

Liane Wiggins, head of womenswear at Matchesfashion.com, notes, ‘We usually don’t opt for completely transparent ensembles, but we’ve noticed our customers embracing sheer fabrics and layering. Personally, I enjoy investing in sheer skirts and styling them for both evening and daywear. Previous seasons’ Prada skirts cleverly incorporated solid panels at the top for a touch of modesty.’

These skirts avoid attention-seeking sequins, mesh, or lace, instead exuding an elegant sensibility through colors associated with understated luxury. Prada presented a standout style in a rich burgundy hue, while Carven, Altuzarra, and Acne Studios balanced the boldness of sheer fabrics with shades of grey, ranging from dove to moody slate. 16Arlington introduced more texture, color, and drama, adorning skirts with shimmering paillettes, yet balanced the look with relaxed styling by pairing them with Wall Street shirts and oversized crew-necks.

For styling inspiration, look to Prada and Carven, where transparent midis are paired with sensible knits and blazers. Wiggins suggests, ‘I adore the juxtaposition of a more feminine sheer skirt in chiffon or organza, in a longer length for a demure and flattering look if you’re less confident. Style it with an oversized cashmere piece and a blazer for that contrast between daring and practical.’

Accessories play a crucial role. If you’re wearing a sheer skirt during the day, it’s advisable to avoid platform heels and stilettos. Opt instead for glossy boots, satin ballerina pumps, or polished loafers. At Prada, the high-shine Mary-Jane loafers were paired with pulled-up black socks, while Givenchy incorporated sheer black hosiery for balance, and Dries Van Noten utilized socks as a distraction tactic.

Practical, roomy bags were clutched close to the body at Acne Studios, 16Arlington, and Altuzarra, preventing this look from veering into ‘going out-out’ territory.”
