Donatella Versace Steps Down as Creative Director, Paving the Way for a New Era at Versace

A major shift is underway in Milan as Donatella Versace announces her decision to step down as chief creative officer of Versace, the legendary fashion house founded by her late brother, Gianni Versace. After nearly 30 years at the creative helm, Donatella will transition into a new role within the company, making way for fresh creative leadership.

The brand has confirmed that Dario Vitale will take over as creative director starting in April, marking the first time someone outside the Versace family will lead its creative vision.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy,” Donatella shared in a statement. She expressed her excitement about seeing Versace evolve under a new perspective while remaining closely involved with the brand. In her new role as chief brand officer, she will focus on Versace’s philanthropic initiatives and brand strategy.

Vitale, who previously served as design director for ready-to-wear at Miu Miu, brings a deep understanding of brand identity and global market potential. Versace CEO Emmanuel Gintzburger praised him as “a rare talent” with a profound appreciation for the house’s heritage and future growth opportunities.

“I am truly honored to join Versace and contribute to this powerful fashion house created by Gianni and Donatella,” Vitale said. “Versace’s influence on fashion history is undeniable, and I am grateful for this opportunity to shape its next chapter.”

Vitale’s debut collection is set to be unveiled in September at Milan Fashion Week, showcasing his vision for Versace’s Spring/Summer 2026 season. With this transition, the brand enters a bold new era while staying rooted in its iconic legacy.
