Maria Grazia Chiuri to Conclude Nine-Year Tenure as Dior Creative Director
In a move that marks the end of a significant era in fashion, Maria Grazia Chiuri is leaving her role as creative director of Dior after nearly a decade at the helm. The announcement comes just two days after Dior’s 2026 cruise show in Rome—a fitting farewell, as it was the first time Chiuri brought the house’s runway to her hometown during her tenure.
A Historic Tenure
Maria Grazia Chiuri made history when she joined Dior in 2016, becoming the first woman ever to lead the storied French maison. Over the past nine years, she has overseen women’s ready-to-wear, haute couture, and accessories, infusing the brand with her signature blend of classic elegance and modern feminist spirit.
Before her time at Dior, Chiuri spent 17 years at Valentino, including eight years as co-creative director alongside Pierpaolo Piccioli. Their partnership was celebrated for redefining Italian glamour, and after Chiuri’s departure, Piccioli continued solo until his own exit in 2024.
A Legacy of Empowerment and Iconic Design
Chiuri’s impact at Dior is undeniable. She brought a new energy to the house, championing women’s empowerment through both her designs and her messaging. Her now-iconic slogan T-shirts—bearing phrases like “We Should All Be Feminists”—sparked global conversations about fashion’s role in social change. She also revived beloved house staples, such as the Dior Saddle bag, and reimagined Dior’s codes for a new generation.
Her work was recognized at the highest levels; in 2019, she was awarded the Légion d’honneur, France’s most prestigious honor.
A Poignant Farewell
In her official statement, Chiuri expressed gratitude for her time at Dior:
“After nine years, I am leaving Dior, delighted to have been given this extraordinary opportunity. I would like to thank Monsieur Arnault for placing his trust in me and Delphine for her support. I am particularly grateful for the work accomplished by my teams and the Ateliers. Their talent and expertise allowed me to realize my vision of committed women’s fashion, in close dialogue with several generations of female artists. Together, we have written an impactful chapter of which I am immensely proud.”
Chiuri’s departure comes at a time of transition for Dior, following the earlier announcement that Kim Jones, creative director of menswear, will also be stepping down. The house has yet to name her successor.
The End of an Era
Maria Grazia Chiuri leaves behind a legacy defined by elegance, innovation, and a powerful commitment to women’s voices in fashion. Her vision has shaped Dior for nearly a decade, and her influence will undoubtedly resonate for years to come.
