Alia Bhatt shines in a custom couture sari by Anamika Khanna at the Filmfare Awards 2024.
Alia Bhatt clinched the Best Actress award at the 69th Filmfare Awards 2024, but it was her stunning custom couture sari designed by Anamika Khanna that truly stole the spotlight as she graced the red carpet. Corsets have evolved significantly from their origins as a relic of the Victorian era. Once associated with discomfort due to their controversial compression of women’s waists, today, they signify a departure from traditional norms and a celebration of body empowerment. No longer restricted to historical costumes, corsets have undergone a transformation in their portrayal, embracing diverse silhouettes and challenging societal expectations. In Bhatt’s ensemble, the corset was elegantly paired with a pre-draped skirt featuring a front slit, drawing inspiration from negligee-style fashion. The garment’s embroidery showcased a fusion of Chikankari and Zardosi art, intricately woven into the fabric.
Bhatt’s bespoke attire was part of Khanna’s Indian Couture Week ’23 Collection, which showcased Kinkhab brocade, sheer fabrics, and satin in a range of white hues. The ensemble was accentuated by a long satin train that extended from the sari’s pallu. The growing popularity of pre-draped or concept saris reflects a significant shift in the fashion landscape. Indian designers like Tarun Tahiliani and Rahul Mishra have seamlessly integrated this trend into their collections. Brands such as Ituvana and Bodice have also introduced their own unique interpretations. For instance, Katrina Kaif donned a concept sari from
Tarun Tahiliani’s ‘After Hours’ collection, crafted from striking red silk chiffon. Following suit, Shanaya Kapoor showcased a signature concept sari from Tahiliani’s Autumn/Winter 2022 couture collection titled ‘Painterly Dreams.’ This ethereal ensemble was complemented by a minimalist approach to jewelry, featuring only a pair of diamond-encrusted chokers from Birdhichand Ghanshyamdas. In terms of makeup and hairstyle, Bhatt opted for her signature bronzed and glowing look, with a subtle metallic eyeshadow that harmonized with the intricate embroidery of the outfit.
