Bhumi Pednekar’s Gold Tissue Kurta Set Was a Love Letter to Chikankari & Kaamdani
Bhumi Pednekar has been serving look after look during the press tour of Mere Husband Ki Biwi, effortlessly switching between playful, eclectic, and classic styles. From fringe skirts that matched her rebellious rom-com character to a timeless Madras checks sari, she’s kept us on our toes. But her most recent ensemble? A stunning gold tissue kurta setthat blended luxury with heritage craftsmanship.
Designed by Dhaaga & Co., the outfit was all about elegance and cultural storytelling. The set featured a long A-line kurta, straight-cut pants, and a flowing dupatta, all crafted from handwoven gold tissue fabric sourced from Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh. The luminous fabric acted as the perfect base to spotlight intricate chikankari and kaamdani embroidery, two treasured Awadhi crafts, meticulously hand-embroidered by artisans from Lucknow.
Awadh, once a thriving region in the Indo-Gangetic Plain, is the birthplace of chikankari, an embroidery technique that has stood the test of time. Some believe its roots trace back to the Mughal era, while others argue it existed as early as the third century BC. One of the finest embroidery styles in India, chikankari involves intricate threadwork on delicate fabrics like muslin, georgette, and silk, created by artisans using a repertoire of 16 unique stitches—including phanda, murri, jaali, bakhiya, and tepchi—to form mesmerizing floral patterns and buttis.
Meanwhile, kaamdani embroidery, a lesser-known but equally exquisite technique, involves delicate metallic detailing, adding a subtle shimmer to the fabric. Over the years, designers like Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla and Anjul Bhandarihave worked tirelessly to keep these heritage crafts alive, seamlessly blending them into modern silhouettes.
To complete the look, Bhumi kept it classic with pearl jewelry, allowing the intricate embroidery to take center stage. Her outfit wasn’t just a fashion statement—it was a tribute to India’s rich textile history, proving that craftsmanship never goes out of style.
