Genelia Deshmukh’s Bandhani Sari Is the Summer Moodboard You Need
As the temps rise, Genelia Deshmukh is here to make a serious case for saris this season. The actor stepped out in a stunning forest green drape from Label Anushree, giving us a masterclass in colour-blocking. Featuring intricate red bandhani dots, the silk sari brought together comfort, craft, and culture—all in one effortlessly chic look.
Styled by Pranay Jaitly and Shounak Amonkar, Genelia’s ensemble was a love letter to the centuries-old tie-dye technique. Bandhani, which gets its name from the Sanskrit word banda (meaning ‘to tie’), has roots tracing back to the Ajanta Caves and medieval Jain manuscripts. The resist-dyeing process, known for its signature motifs—think elephants, peacocks, paisleys, and florals—can take months (even up to a year!) to complete, making every piece a true work of art.
Lately, bandhani has been having a major revival, thanks to designers like Anita Dongre, who are giving it a fresh, modern spin. Celebs like Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, and Aditi Rao Hydari have all been spotted rocking the heritage craft. For an engagement party, Hydari chose a Raw Mango bandhani sari in deep red with a pistachio green blouse—talk about dreamy!
Genelia kept things classic yet statement-making, pairing her sari with a bold red blouse that echoed the bandhani motifs. A pair of striking jhumkas, stacked kadas from Jagdish Jewellers, and a chic potli bag from Douxamour sealed the deal.
