Janhvi Kapoor embraces heritage with a Korvai Kanjeevaram sari and timeless temple jewellery

Janhvi Kapoor’s love for the sari is no secret. Her wardrobe is a curated canvas of six-yard statements — from crystal-encrusted sari gowns to breezy floral drapes perfect for both casual brunches and business appearances. But it’s the classic silks — the Kanjeevarams and Korvais — that she returns to with quiet reverence.

Most recently, to mark the twin celebrations of Vishu and Puthandu, Kapoor reached for tradition. She wore an ivory Korvai Kanjeevaram sari with a rich gold border — a subtle yet striking homage to her Tamil and Malayali roots. The Korvai, known for its distinct weaving technique where the body and border are crafted separately and then interlocked, adds a regal contrast to the otherwise soft palette. Translating to “to bind together” in Tamil, the Korvai technique often features zari or resham-thread borders in motifs inspired by temple gopurams — those towering, sculpted gateways that crown South Indian temples.

Kapoor styled the sari with a simple, cap-sleeved blouse edged in gold but let her jewellery do the talking. A pair of pearl-dusted gold jhumkas, a layered necklace duo, and an armful of traditional kadas framed her look in opulence. The focal point, however, was the ornate kamarbandh — a waistbelt detailed with divine figurines, anchoring the ensemble in sacred grandeur.

Temple jewellery, once reserved for rituals and ceremonies, has seamlessly evolved into a modern festive essential. In Kapoor’s case, it becomes a bridge between reverence and contemporary celebration. Her approach to sari dressing proves one thing: when styled right, a silk sari is truly seasonless — equally fitting for an afternoon wedding and an after-hours soirée.
