Wearable Art from Waste: Kavya Tamboli Takes London Fashion Week by Storm

In a world where sustainability is increasingly influencing fashion, Indian artist Kavya Tamboli is making waves with her innovative approach to wearable art. Her creations—sculpted metal breastplates, futuristic bib necklaces, and large asymmetrical earrings—are not just striking statements but also crafted from industrial waste. What was once discarded aluminium residue has now found its way to the global red carpet, making its debut at London Fashion Week.

Growing up around her family’s ship-breaking business in Gujarat’s Alang, the world’s largest ship-breaking yard, Tamboli was surrounded by industrial scrap from an early age. This exposure ignited a fascination with metal and its transformative possibilities. Her journey into wearable art began when she noticed the organic forms created by molten aluminium slag. What could have been waste instead became the foundation of her collection, Metamorphosis, which turns discarded materials into bold, lightweight adornments that challenge perceptions of beauty.

At London Fashion Week, Tamboli collaborated with Poet-Lab to create custom art pieces for 50 front-row influencers, celebrities, and key figures. These sculptural designs seamlessly extended the essence of the runway collection beyond the fashion show itself. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with attendees appreciating the way the pieces elevated storytelling beyond the garments, making the entire experience more immersive.

Her work pushes the boundaries of material and form, redefining industrial scrap as a medium of high fashion. Pieces from Metamorphosis include sculptural aluminium neckpieces and earrings that retain the raw beauty of their source material. A standout creation is a stainless-steel coin torso sculpture, where each coin is meticulously welded to form a fluid, body-hugging structure. Designed to be both wearable and display-worthy, its reflective surface interacts dynamically with light, embodying the tension between raw and refined aesthetics.

Tamboli’s approach highlights the untapped potential of repurposed materials in fashion. She envisions a future where waste is seen not as a problem to be discarded but as a resource for creativity.
